Girl Crush Wednesday: Shirley Chisholm

After seeing a cool fashion spread inspired by Shirley Chisholm’s style in this month’s Essence magazine, I thought it was a perfect time to re-acquaint myself with Shirley.  After a strict British-style Barbados upbringing, Shirley served as a New York Congressman and a U.S. Congressman.  In 1972, she ran as a Democratic nominee for president.  She was vocal not only about African-American civil rights but equality for women.  And she was so gangsta that her biography was called, “Unbought and Unbossed.”  And I love her snazzy style of mixing graphic prints while rocking big hair.  You go girl!

Even though she passed away back in 2005, Shirley’s spirit lives in every strong woman in America – black, white, latino or any other “box” you may check.
