Being a lifelong lover of fashion, I am fascinated by socialites.  I always have been.  Even more fascinating as a general rule are black socialites and style gurus, of which, sadly, there are very few.

So I’ve been following Genevieve Jones for quite a while as she has made her way to the pages of virtually every fashion mag in the U.S.

Her famous jewelry designs:

I love a stylish girl of any color, but I will admit I am especially fond of stylish black girls.  It makes me feel I have a place in the universe.

What I’m Rocking: Straight Leg (Skinny) Rich Chick

Today I wore one of my absolute fave jackets for only the second time ever:

Papell silk jacket:  Goodwill – I got this years ago.  As a 10 petite, I could never really fit it.  I love the mash up of chain link, leopard print and jewel tones.  And the buttons rock!  and the shrunken fit is so my style.

Purple favorite tee:  Gap Outlet – Just a little under layer.  Clearly the jacket is the focus here, people!

Black Style & Co. straight leg pants:  Macy’s – I love these.  The straight leg, the seams on the front of the legs… it’s all perfect for looking skinny. 🙂

Black and purple peep toe platform shoes:  DSW – Got these last March for Amy’s birthday and I still love them.  Very comfy for their (tall) height.

I titled this post, “Straight Leg (Skinny) Rich Chick,” because that is exactly how I feel today.  It’s sunny; I feel skinny; and I love this jacket.  Love you!!!

Fall 2011 Fashion Shows: New York

New York Fashion Week looks like it rocked.

Diane von Furstenberg – bright colors and mix and match prints with hints of gold and great accessories (hello, shades!)

Jason Wu – loving the feathers, lace, sharp shapes and the bold graphic colors, especially the best tuxedo jacket I’ve ever laid my eyes on… it’s the best collection of the New York shows.  No wonder Jason Wu is both a fashion darling and a fave of Michelle Obama

L’Wren Scott – a collection for fall called A Tropical Conversation, I knew I’d love it at first sight

Marc by Marc Jacobs – a mash up of prints and slim silhouettes

Victoria Beckham – the ladylike shapes never stop and there are even loads of punchy colors, love the shawl neckline dress

What I’m Rocking: Ralph Lauren Crest

So, like any fifth grader excited to wear a new piece, I could not resist rocking my new Lauren Ralph Lauren blazer to work today, where I was presenting to the Executive Leadership Team:

Black Lauren by Ralph Lauren Blazer – As you know, I just bought it this weekend.  It was a steak at $145, and I will love it for years.  I also think it has potential for my “country club preppy-Queen of Hearts plays croquet-Mad Hatter tea party” inspired champagne and pate birthday party.

Black pencil skirt – I got this at Burlington Coat Factory in Omaha over the holidays for $16.99.  Simple but effective.

Black and white striped top – I have multiple versions of this top from H&M.  And I love it, even though it’s a little baggy in the bust. 😦

My Weekend Acquisitions

So, I know that I am not really supposed to be shopping, but this weekend I found a few things too great to resist at H&M, Forever 21 and my local Macy’s that is going out of business:

Grey sunglasses – these were $5.80 at Forever 21, will be great for hanging by the pool in just a few months

Coral and gold earrings – I love a chandelier earring and I had to get something in this spring’s signature color.  $4.80 make it a must buy.

Ivory knit cap – This was less than $6 at H&M and I love to toss these on for casual “bad hair” days with jeans and boots

Black Lauren by Ralph Lauren Crest Blazer – reduced to $145 (extremely expensive to me for a single item, but I have been wanting this blazer literally for years and it fits impeccably

Black straight leg Style & Co. pants – reduced to $11.99 for final sale, my first size 8 pants in so long I can’t remember

Black Style & Co. tab waist trousers – reduced to $14.99 for final sale, another pair of size 8s baby!

Fitting into size eight pants was a huge accomplishment for me.  And it only took losing 42.2 pounds to-date.  I look forward to all of the fun shopping this enables.  🙂  And yes, I know, I am not supposed to be shopping.  But when a deal too good to be true comes around, I believe carpe diem.  As only a hard core shopping fanatic believes…

A slightly drunken trip to Burlington Coat Factory encouraged me to buy a few things:

Black and gold Anne Klein skirt suit – a little Florida grandma but I think it will be fab as separates and a steal at $49.99

Also on sale at RueLaLa right now for $89.90

Polka Dot Swimsuit – I also found this cute little Jantzen polka dot swimsuit for only $19.99

And when I saw this fab little Suzi Chin for Maggy number, I knew it was perfect for my champagne and pate birthday party in May.  Get the dress at HauteLook.  If you are not a member, please use this invite link and sign up.

I want an “Alice in Wonderland” feeling of The Queen of Hearts plays croquet/Mad Hatter Tea Party with a very preppy Hilfiger ad feeling.

Stay tuned for more on how the ideas for my birthday party are shaping up.  I am already psyched for it, and it’s over two and a half months away.  It’s always nice to have something to look forward to…

I must admit I’ve never really seen any of Pam Grier’s blacksploitation films, but I know that a lot of people find her quite foxy:

Ah, the seventies were pretty darn cool.  Glad we get loads of 70’s inspired fashion this spring!

Blow Your Paycheck Friday: Nanette Lepore Silk Leopard Dress

There is just about nothing I love more than a chic leopard print dress.  I don’t own any Nanette Lepore although I really dig her aesthetic.  And at $332, you don’t even really have to blow a whole paycheck on this fab little number:

Get it at Saks.  I am really very strongly considering getting it as a “weight loss gift” to myself once I reach my goal weight in 6.8 pounds…  What do you think?  Is it worth 46 pounds of sweat and calorie counting?

Girl Crush Wednesday: Katie Holmes

I was never much of a Dawson’s Creek girl even though I was probably its target audience as a college freshman.  (Unlike my love affair with “Gossip Girl” which I am clearly too old to watch.)  When Katie Holmes got with Tom Cruise, I was certain it was some kind of publicity stunt – couch jumping and all.  Of course, I was wrong.  Katie, Tom and Suri appear to be the happiest family ever.  And no, I do not support little girls wearing heels every day.  Not at all.  And now Katie gets to play the chicest woman of all times, Jackie Kennedy.

I still think Katie did not get fly until she became besties with Posh.  That bob really saved the day!
